Kota vs Hyderabad weather: a month-by-month comparison
Written by Kota Weather Editorial Team · Updated

Kota vs Hyderabad weather looks like a dull comparison at first glance. IMD’s yearly averages for the two cities are almost the same: a mean maximum of 33.1 C at Kota and 33.0 C at Hyderabad, and a mean minimum of 21.8 C against 21.1 C. Rainfall is close too. But averages hide how a year actually feels. Hyderabad sits high on the Deccan plateau, which keeps its summer milder and its winter warm. Kota lies low on the Chambal plains of south-east Rajasthan, far from the sea, and swings between a fierce summer and a genuinely cool winter. For students from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh moving to Kota for coaching, and for their families, those swings are what matter.
This comparison uses the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Climatological Tables 1991-2020 for Kota (station 42452) and Hyderabad (station 43128), from IMD’s Data Service Portal. They are long-term averages, not a forecast. For current conditions in Kota see Kota weather today.

Winter: Kota is much cooler
From December to February, Kota is the cooler city by a wide margin. January afternoons average 23.2 C at Kota against 29.7 C at Hyderabad, and nights 11.2 C against 15.9 C. February is similar. The coldest night of an average year is about 8.1 C at Kota and 10.2 C at Hyderabad.
Hyderabad’s winter mornings are cool enough for a light layer; Kota’s need a proper jacket, and nights call for a quilt. Clear, dry skies let Kota lose heat quickly after sunset, so evenings turn cold fast. Students arriving in Kota in July often forget that they will need winter clothes by December. See Kota winter weather and Kota weather in December.
Summer: Kota’s May and June are far hotter
March is still warmer in Hyderabad, 36.1 C against 33.3 C. In April the two are close, and from May Kota pulls ahead: 42.6 C against 39.7 C in May, and 40.3 C against 35.1 C in June. Kota’s nights are the bigger shock. Its May mean minimum is 30.0 C against 26.6 C at Hyderabad, and its June mean minimum 29.5 C against 24.4 C. The hottest day of an average year reaches about 45.8 C at Kota and 42.9 C at Hyderabad.
June is the month that catches people out. In Hyderabad the monsoon usually brings relief through June; in Kota, June is often still in full summer mode until the monsoon arrives late in the month. Kota’s pre-monsoon air is also much drier: relative humidity in May averages 31 percent at 08:30 IST and 15 percent at 17:30, against 50 and 31 percent at Hyderabad. Read Kota heatwave, Kota weather in June and Kota wet bulb temperature.
Monsoon: Kota’s is shorter but heavier at its peak
Kota’s rain is packed into July and August: 296.7 mm and 269.6 mm, against 162.0 mm and 203.9 mm at Hyderabad. Hyderabad’s season is longer. It gets real rain in April and May (27.2 mm and 34.5 mm) from pre-monsoon storms, more in June and September, and 113.9 mm in October, when Kota is already almost dry with 18.9 mm. Over the year Hyderabad averages about 49.8 rainy days to Kota’s 38.6.
Monsoon temperatures are higher at Kota: July averages 34.3 / 27.0 C against 31.5 / 22.9 C. That combination of heat and humidity makes Kota’s July and August muggy between showers. See Kota monsoon and Kota weather in July.
How the heat feels: humidity and wet bulb
The humidity rows show that the two cities feel different even at similar temperatures. Hyderabad’s morning relative humidity stays between about 50 and 82 percent through the year; Kota’s drops to 26 percent in April and 31 percent in May, then climbs to 80 percent in August. Hyderabad’s mean wet bulb temperature, a measure that combines heat and moisture, stays close to 22 to 24 C from April to September. Kota’s rises from about 18 C in April to about 25 to 26 C in July and August.
In practice, Kota’s summer is a dry, baking heat that dehydrates fast, and its monsoon is the stickiest part of its year. Hyderabad is moderately humid for much of the year but rarely as extreme in either direction. Students from Hyderabad usually notice Kota’s dry spring air first: dry skin, cracked lips and sore eyes are common in March and April, so pack moisturiser and drink more water than feels necessary. See Kota humidity.
Winter air and mornings
Winter mornings in Kota are cooler and clearer than in Hyderabad, and calm, cool air can trap smoke and dust near the ground, especially around festivals. Kota’s morning visibility drops below 1 km on about 8 days a year, mostly in December and January; Hyderabad’s on fewer than one. Check the CPCB air quality index before early outdoor exercise. See Kota air quality and Kota fog.
Thunderstorms, cloud and wind
Hyderabad is the stormier city. IMD’s tables give it about 41.6 thunder days a year against 21.7 at Kota, with peaks in May, June and September, and about 3.2 squall days a year, while Kota’s table records none. Kota’s thunderstorms cluster in the monsoon months and its pre-monsoon weather brings dust storms instead, about 3 days a year. See Kota thunderstorms and Kota dust storm.
Kota also has much clearer skies. It averages about 186 mornings a year with no cloud at 08:30 IST, against about 76 at Hyderabad. Clear skies explain both Kota’s hotter summer days and its colder winter nights. Hyderabad is a little windier, with an annual mean of 7.8 km/h against 6.3 km/h. See Kota cloud cover and Kota wind.
Moving from Hyderabad to Kota: what to plan for
- May and June: the hardest months. A cooler or good fan, curtains, steady water and electrolytes, and study plans that use the cooler early mornings. See Kota weather for students.
- December and January: bring a jacket, sweater, warm socks and a quilt, or buy them in Kota in November.
- July and August: heavy bursts of rain; an umbrella, quick-dry clothes and care around waterlogged streets.
- October and November: Kota is dry and pleasant while Hyderabad can still be rainy, which makes it a good time for family visits. See Kota weather in October.
