Kota vs Ajmer weather: a month-by-month comparison
Written by Kota Weather Editorial Team · Updated

Kota vs Ajmer weather compares two Rajasthan cities a few hours apart by road or rail, with climates that are related but not the same. Kota lies on the Chambal river in the Hadoti region of the south-east, where the monsoon is heavier. Ajmer sits among the Aravalli hills in central Rajasthan, drier and slightly cooler at night. Many travellers combine them, with Ajmer’s dargah and nearby Pushkar on one side and Kota’s riverfront and palaces on the other.
This comparison uses the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Climatological Tables 1991-2020 for Kota (station 42452) and Ajmer (station 42343), from IMD’s Data Service Portal. They are long-term averages, not a forecast. For current conditions in Kota, see Kota weather today.

Max and min are IMD’s mean daily maximum and minimum temperatures; rain is the mean monthly total.
Summer: Kota runs about 2 C hotter
The clearest temperature difference is in the hot season. From April to June Kota’s afternoons are 1.6 to 2.3 C warmer: 39.3 C against 37.6 C in April, 42.6 C against 40.3 C in May and 40.3 C against 38.7 C in June. Nights follow the same pattern, with May averaging 30.0 C at Kota and 28.0 C at Ajmer. The hottest day of an average year reaches about 45.8 C at Kota and 43.8 C at Ajmer.
Both cities are very dry before the monsoon, with April evening humidity of 13 percent at Kota and 14 percent at Ajmer. Dust storms are equally common, about 3.0 days a year at Kota and 3.1 at Ajmer, mostly in May and June. Ajmer gets a little more May rain from pre-monsoon storms, 20.4 mm against 9.7 mm. For Kota’s version of the season see Kota heatwave, Kota weather in May and Kota dust storm.
Monsoon: Kota is clearly wetter
Kota’s monsoon is the stronger one. July and August bring 296.7 mm and 269.6 mm at Kota against 182.2 mm and 180.6 mm at Ajmer, and the annual totals are 816.2 mm and 571.4 mm. Kota also has more rainy days, about 38.6 a year against 31.2. Temperatures in the monsoon are close, within about half a degree by day.
The extra rain shows in the landscape: the Chambal and its gorges turn green, and in heavy years the dams upstream release water through Kota Barrage. Ajmer’s lakes, including Ana Sagar, also depend on monsoon rain, but the region gets less of it. Read Kota monsoon, Kota rainfall and Kota barrage flood season.
Winter: very similar, a little crisper in Ajmer
From October to February the two cities are almost twins by day, within about one degree in every month, with Ajmer fractionally warmer in December and January. Ajmer’s nights are about one degree cooler: 10.1 C against 11.2 C in January. The coldest night of an average year is about 5.9 C at Ajmer and 8.1 C at Kota.
Ajmer’s winter air is drier, with January evening humidity of 30 percent against 40 percent at Kota. Kota gets more poor-visibility mornings, about 8.3 a year with visibility of 1 km or less against 2.5 at Ajmer, from mist that forms over the river and lowlands in December and January. See Kota winter weather, Kota fog and Kota weather in January.
Wind, storms and skies
The two stations have almost the same annual mean wind, 6.3 km/h at Kota and 6.4 km/h at Ajmer, with both windiest in May and June. Ajmer has more calm mornings, about 154 a year at 08:30 IST against 102 at Kota. Thunder days are nearly equal, about 21.7 at Kota and 21.2 at Ajmer, though Ajmer records a little more hail, about 1.0 day a year against 0.4. Skies are clear on about 186 mornings a year at Kota and 192 at Ajmer. See Kota wind, Kota thunderstorms and Kota cloud cover.
Humidity and wet days
Humidity is one of the few measures where the two cities are almost identical over the year: the annual mean relative humidity is 55 percent at 08:30 IST at both, and 36 percent at Kota against 34 percent at Ajmer at 17:30. The small difference shows in the monsoon, when Kota’s heavier rain keeps evenings moister (69 percent in August against 65 percent), and in winter, when Kota’s January evenings average 40 percent against 30 percent.
Because Kota is also a little warmer, its wet bulb temperature, which combines heat and humidity, is higher in every month. In July it averages about 25.9 C at 17:30 IST at Kota against 25.2 C at Ajmer, so Kota’s monsoon evenings feel a touch heavier.
Counting every day with at least 0.3 mm of rain, Kota has about 56 wet days a year and Ajmer about 45. Overcast mornings are equally rare, about 27 a year at Kota and 29 at Ajmer, mostly in July and August. Outside the monsoon, both cities have long runs of dry, sunny weather. See Kota humidity and Kota wet bulb temperature.
