Kota vs Ahmedabad weather: a month-by-month comparison
Written by Kota Weather Editorial Team · Updated

Kota vs Ahmedabad weather matters to the many Gujarati families who send children to Kota for coaching, and to travellers on the road and rail links between Gujarat and Rajasthan. On paper the two cities look alike: both are hot, both get most of their rain from the summer monsoon, and their yearly totals are close. In daily life they feel different. Ahmedabad has a warmer winter and a stickier summer; Kota has a cooler winter, a fiercer and drier May, and noticeably hotter nights before the monsoon.
This comparison uses the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Climatological Tables 1991-2020 for Kota (station 42452) and Ahmedabad (station 42647), from IMD’s Data Service Portal. They are long-term averages, not a forecast. For current conditions see Kota weather today.

Max and min are IMD’s mean daily maximum and minimum temperatures; rain is the mean monthly total.
Winter: Kota is noticeably cooler
From November to February, Kota is the cooler city by a clear margin. Its January afternoons average 23.2 C against 27.9 C in Ahmedabad, a gap of almost five degrees, and December shows a similar difference (25.7 C against 29.5 C). Nights differ less: 11.2 C against 12.4 C in January. The coldest night of an average year is actually similar, about 8.1 C at Kota and 7.2 C at Ahmedabad, so both cities can have a sharp cold snap.
The practical result is that a winter in Kota feels like a proper cool season, with jackets in the morning and evening and quilts at night, while Ahmedabad’s winter is milder. Kota also gets slightly more winter rain from passing western disturbances, though both are mostly dry. See Kota winter weather and Kota weather in December.
Spring: Ahmedabad warms first, Kota peaks higher
Ahmedabad heats up earlier in the year: its March mean maximum is 35.8 C against 33.3 C at Kota. By April the two are level, about 39 to 40 C. In May Kota overtakes, with a mean maximum of 42.6 C against 41.8 C, and its nights are much warmer, 30.0 C against 27.3 C. In June Kota is still hotter, 40.3 / 29.5 C against 39.0 / 27.7 C, and its June mornings are drier, with 50 percent relative humidity at 08:30 IST against 73 percent at Ahmedabad. The hottest day of an average year reaches about 45.8 C at Kota and 44.7 C at Ahmedabad. Read Kota heatwave and Kota weather in June.
Dry heat vs humid heat
The humidity rows in IMD’s tables explain why the two summers feel different. In May, Kota’s relative humidity averages 31 percent at 08:30 IST and 15 percent at 17:30; Ahmedabad’s averages 63 and 25 percent. The mean wet bulb temperature, which combines heat and humidity, is about 22 C at Kota in May against about 25 C at Ahmedabad.
What that means on the ground: in Kota sweat evaporates fast, skin and lips dry out, and people often underestimate how much water they lose. In Ahmedabad the air feels heavier and sweat lingers, so the same temperature can feel more oppressive. Neither is safe in a heatwave. The difference between the two kinds of heat is explained in Kota wet bulb temperature and Kota humidity.
Monsoon: similar totals, similar timing in July
Once the monsoon is established, the two cities are remarkably close. July brings 296.7 mm at Kota and 310.1 mm at Ahmedabad; August 269.6 mm and 242.2 mm. Over the year Kota averages about 38.6 rainy days and Ahmedabad about 33.9. Temperatures in July and August are within about one degree of each other.
Ahmedabad’s tables record a few squall days a year, about 1.8, mostly in June and July; Kota’s record none, though both cities see thunderstorms, about 23 days a year at Ahmedabad and 21.7 at Kota. Kota’s main monsoon hazards are waterlogging in low-lying areas and high water on the Chambal when dams upstream release water. See Kota monsoon, Kota thunderstorms and Kota barrage flood season.
Fog, mist and winter mornings
Neither city is foggy by north Indian standards. IMD’s tables give Kota about 2.9 fog days a year and Ahmedabad about 1.9, almost all in December and January. Morning visibility below 1 km is recorded on about 8 days a year at Kota and about 3 at Ahmedabad. In Kota, mist tends to form over the Chambal and low-lying parts of the city at dawn and clear by mid-morning. The bigger winter travel risk for both cities is fog further north delaying long-distance trains, so check running status on cold mornings. See Kota fog and Kota travel weather guide.
Autumn
October and November are warmer in Ahmedabad: 35.6 C against 34.6 C in October and 33.1 C against 30.1 C in November. Kota cools into its pleasant season sooner, which makes late October and November a good time for visiting families. Festival travel in this period, around Dussehra and Diwali, usually meets dry weather in both cities, with warm afternoons and cool evenings in Kota. See Kota weather in November and Kota Dussehra Mela weather.
Wind and air
Both cities are windiest in May and June, about 10 to 11 km/h on average at each, and both are calmer in winter. Calm, cool winter mornings trap dust and smoke in both, so air quality is worst from November to January. Check the CPCB index before outdoor exercise; see Kota air quality and Kota wind.
Moving from Ahmedabad to Kota: practical notes
- Winter: pack one more warm layer than you would use at home, a proper quilt and socks for early classes.
- April to June: expect hotter nights than in Ahmedabad. A cooler or a good fan, curtains and steady water intake matter more than daytime outings. See Kota weather for students.
- Monsoon: the rain will feel familiar; carry an umbrella and avoid flooded underpasses and riverbanks.
- Travel days: heavy rain can disrupt road travel across both states in July and August; check IMD warnings and train running status before leaving.
