Kota weather in June: from peak heat to the first monsoon rain
Written by Kota Weather Editorial Team · Updated

Kota weather in June starts as summer and ends, in most years, as monsoon. The first weeks are close to May in heat, with hot westerly winds and warm nights. Then the air turns humid, clouds build in the afternoons, dust storms and thunderstorms become more frequent, and the first proper monsoon rain arrives. This guide uses the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Climatological Tables 1991-2020 for the Kota Airport observatory (station 42452) to describe a normal June and how to plan around it.
Normals are long-term averages, not a forecast. For the next few days, use the Kota weather forecast page and IMD’s district warnings.
June at a glance: IMD climate tables

The table shows June as a hinge. Temperatures fall only a little from May, but humidity jumps: morning relative humidity rises from 31 percent in May to 50 percent in June, and rainfall rises roughly eightfold. The cloud cover at the evening observation averages 4.2 oktas (eighths of the sky), compared with 2.3 in May.
Early June: still summer
In the first half of the month Kota usually remains in the grip of the hot season. The mean of the highest maximum in June is 45.2 C, so a heatwave day is entirely possible, and nights near 30 C give little relief. The difference from May is that the air begins to carry more moisture, so the heat can feel heavier even when the thermometer reads a little lower. Our guide to Kota humidity explains why damp heat is harder on the body than dry heat.
Practical points for early June:
- Treat heatwave warnings as seriously as in May. See the Kota heatwave guide for IMD’s criteria and colour codes.
- Keep water, oral rehydration salts and a cap or scarf with you.
- Coolers lose some of their effect as humidity rises; fans and shade matter more.
Dust storms, thunder and pre-monsoon showers
June is the stormiest month of the dry-to-wet transition. IMD’s tables count 1.2 dust storm days, the highest of any month, and 4.1 days with thunder in an average June. The observatory also records about three mornings with winds of 20 km/h or more, the most of the year, and the mean wind speed of 11.1 km/h is the highest of any month. Winds blow mostly from the west and south-west.
A typical pre-monsoon storm builds after a very hot afternoon. A gust front arrives first, often carrying dust, then the temperature drops sharply and a short burst of rain, lightning and thunder may follow. These storms can bring down hoardings, branches and power lines. Read our dust storm guide and lightning safety guide before the season starts.
The monsoon arrives
In most years the southwest monsoon reaches south-east Rajasthan during the second half of June, but the arrival date varies by a week or more from year to year, and an early or late onset changes the whole month. IMD announces the progress of the monsoon daily, and the Meteorological Centre Jaipur publishes Rajasthan-specific updates. Do not plan around a fixed date; plan around the updates.
Once the monsoon sets in, maximum temperatures fall towards the mid-30s, the sky stays cloudier and rain comes in heavier spells. June’s normal of 80.3 mm on 4.7 rainy days is an average of very different years: a late onset can leave June almost dry, while an early, active onset can deliver more than the normal in a few days. Our Kota monsoon guide explains the season as a whole, and IMD rainfall categories explains what “heavy” and “very heavy” mean in millimetres.
Daily life in June
- Students and hostels. June is a common move-in month for coaching students. Check that rooms have working fans, that windows close properly for storms and that there is somewhere to dry clothes once rain begins. The Kota weather for students guide has a checklist.
- Power and water. Storms can cut power. Keep phones and power banks charged and store some drinking water.
- Roads. The first heavy rain often causes waterlogging on low roads and underpasses. Avoid driving through flowing water.
- Health. Heat illness remains the main risk early in the month; stomach infections and mosquito-borne illness rise once water starts to collect. Drink safe water and remove standing water around the home.
Visiting Kota in June
June is not a comfortable month for sightseeing. Early June is very hot, and late June brings storms and the start of the rains. If you visit, plan outdoor sights for dawn, keep the afternoon free, and keep an eye on the river: Chambal water levels and dam releases matter more as the monsoon develops. See Kota Barrage flood season and best time to visit Kota.
June humidity and cloud: the turn of the season
June is when Kota’s heat changes character. At 08:30 IST the mean wet bulb temperature jumps to 24.6 C, from 22.0 C in May, as monsoon moisture arrives, while the air temperature is still 32.8 C in the morning and 38.2 C at 17:30 IST. High heat plus rising humidity makes late June the most stressful mix of the year; see Kota wet bulb temperature. Cloud builds too: mean cloud at 17:30 rises to 4.2 oktas, and cloudless evenings fall to about 3 in the month. See Kota cloud cover.
The monsoon usually arrives earlier to the south and east. Bhopal averages 132.8 mm of June rain and Indore 147.3 mm, against 80.3 mm at Kota. See Kota vs Bhopal weather.
