Kota weather by month: what each month is really like
Written by Kota Weather Editorial Team · Updated

Kota weather by month follows one of the most predictable rhythms in India: dry heat that builds from March to a peak in May, a monsoon that turns the Chambal valley green from late June to September, and a mild, sunny winter from November to February. This page sets out what each month normally looks like in Kota, using the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) official 1991-2020 climate normals for the Kota Airport observatory, and explains what those numbers mean if you live here, study here or are planning a visit.
These are averages, not forecasts. If you need the weather for the next few days, go to our guide on where to get the live Kota weather forecast.

Two things stand out. First, the annual average maximum is above 33 C, so “hot” is the default setting for most of the year. Second, the rain is extremely concentrated: June to September brings about 755 mm of the 816 mm annual total, roughly 93 percent. Outside those four months, a month with more than one rainy day is unusual.
Month by month: what the numbers feel like
January
The coolest month. Afternoons around 23 C are sunny and pleasant, but mornings start near 11 C on average and can drop to low single figures during a cold spell. Early fog over the Chambal and on the highways is common in some years. A jacket or shawl for mornings and evenings is essential. Read more in our Kota weather in January guide and the wider Kota winter weather guide.
February
Warmer by about 4 C at both ends of the day. Mornings are fresh rather than cold, afternoons are near 27 C, and the air is still dry. Many people consider February the most comfortable month of the year for sightseeing; see Kota weather in February for the details.
March
The turn towards summer. Afternoons average 33 C and the first 38 to 40 C days arrive late in the month. Mornings and evenings are still pleasant, so outdoor plans work if you start early. Holi usually falls in March, and our Kota weather in March guide covers it.
April
Summer proper. A mean maximum of 39.3 C means many afternoons are already above 40 C, and the record for April is 47.5 C. Humidity is very low, so sweat evaporates fast and dehydration creeps up on people. Plan the day around the heat, as our Kota weather in April guide explains.
May
The peak of the heat. The mean maximum is 42.6 C and even the average night stays at 30 C, which is why May feels relentless: there is little relief after dark. Kota’s all-time record of 48.5 C fell in May. Heatwave days, hot westerly winds and occasional dust storms are normal. Our Kota heatwave guide covers how IMD defines a heatwave and how to cope, and Kota weather in May describes the month in full.
June
Two months in one. The first half is usually as hot as May, with rising humidity that makes it feel worse. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms bring squalls and short downpours, and the monsoon itself usually reaches the Kota region in the last part of the month. June averages 80 mm of rain over about five rainy days. Our Kota weather in June guide covers the switch from heat to rain.
July
The wettest month, with almost 300 mm of rain over nearly 12 rainy days on average. Temperatures drop sharply from June, to a mean maximum of about 34 C, but humidity is high. Rain tends to come in heavy spells with breaks in between rather than all-day drizzle. See Kota monsoon for onset, breaks and what the rain means for travel, and Kota weather in July for the month in detail.
August
Nearly as wet as July and the coolest month of the monsoon by day (mean maximum 32.2 C). The Chambal is at its fullest, and this is when the dams upstream may fill and water has to be released through Kota Barrage. Our Kota Barrage and Chambal flood season guide explains what that means for the city, and Kota weather in August describes the month.
September
The monsoon weakens through the month and usually withdraws from Rajasthan in the second half. Rain halves to about 109 mm, sunshine returns, and the landscape is at its greenest. Afternoons climb back to 34 C and it can feel sticky until the humidity drops. More in Kota weather in September.
October
Post-monsoon and dry. Afternoons are still warm at about 34.6 C, but nights fall to around 22 C and the air dries out quickly. Rain is rare. The Kota Dussehra Mela runs in this period; our Dussehra Mela 2026 weather page looks at those evenings in detail, and Kota weather in October covers the whole month.
November
One of the best months in Kota. Clear skies, afternoons near 30 C and nights around 17 C. Almost no rain (3.8 mm on average). Light layers are enough for evenings. More in Kota weather in November.
December
Cool, dry and sunny. Afternoons near 26 C, mornings around 12.6 C, and the first cold mornings of winter late in the month. Fog becomes possible in the last two weeks. More in Kota weather in December.
Humidity by month
IMD normals also record relative humidity at 17:30 IST, which shows how the feel of the heat changes: 40% in January, 30% in February, 19% in March, 13% in April, 15% in May, 33% in June, 62% in July, 69% in August, 54% in September, 31% in October and November, and 37% in December. The dry months explain why April and May are hot but bearable in the shade, and the jump in June explains why the weeks before the monsoon feel so oppressive. See Kota humidity for what each level means in practice.
The four seasons in Kota
IMD groups the year into four seasons, and they fit Kota well:
- Winter (December to February): dry, sunny, cool mornings, occasional cold waves and fog.
- Hot weather season (March to May): rising heat, very low humidity, heatwaves from April, dust storms in May.
- Southwest monsoon (June to September): humid, with nearly all of the year’s rain.
- Post-monsoon (October and November): dry, clear and steadily cooler.
If you are choosing travel dates, our best time to visit Kota guide turns these seasons into practical advice. For rain totals and how rainfall varies from year to year, see Kota rainfall; for heat and cold records, see Kota temperature.
“This month”, “next month” and “last month”
The old version of this site had separate pages that tried to show this month, next month and last month in live numbers. We have replaced them with this single guide, for a simple reason: a month-ahead daily forecast does not exist in any reliable form, and a month-to-date record is better read straight from the official source.
- This month or next month: use the table above to see what is normal, then check the IMD forecast as your dates come into range. IMD also publishes extended-range outlooks for the coming weeks on its website.
- Last month: IMD’s regional centre in Jaipur publishes daily and monthly weather summaries for Rajasthan stations, and IMD’s climate services publish monthly climate summaries. These are the reliable record of what actually happened.
How to use normals well
A normal is a 30-year average. Real months scatter around it. A July can bring half its normal rain or double it; a May can be a few degrees cooler or hotter than average. So use normals to decide what kind of clothes to pack, what time of day to go out, and which months suit you, then use the forecast in the final week before you go. Our what to pack for Kota list is built on exactly that approach.
