Kota vs Jaipur weather: a month-by-month comparison
Written by Kota Weather Editorial Team · Updated

Kota vs Jaipur weather is a common question for students moving to Kota from Jaipur, for families visiting both cities, and for anyone planning a Rajasthan trip that takes in the capital and the Chambal city. The short answer is that the two cities share the same seasons, but Kota is a little hotter in summer, a little milder on winter nights and noticeably wetter in the monsoon. This page compares the two using the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) 1991-2020 climate normals for Kota Airport and Jaipur International Airport.
These are long-term averages. For the coming days in either city, use the IMD forecast; our Kota weather forecast guide explains where to find it.

Summer: Kota runs a little hotter
From March to June, Kota’s afternoons average 0.6 to 1.7 C hotter than Jaipur’s, and its nights 1.6 to 2.9 C warmer. That second number matters more than it looks. In May, Kota’s average night stays at 30.0 C against 27.1 C in Jaipur, so there is less relief after dark. Anyone who has spent a May in both cities will recognise the feeling: Jaipur is fiercely hot by day, but its nights cool a little more.
Both cities are in the zone where IMD regularly issues heatwave warnings from April to June. The practical advice is the same for both: plan outdoor activity for early morning and evening, drink steadily, and take official heat alerts seriously. Our Kota heatwave guide covers how IMD defines a heatwave and how to cope.
Monsoon: Kota is clearly wetter
The biggest difference between the two cities is rain. Kota’s normal annual rainfall is 816.2 mm, about 36 percent more than Jaipur’s 600.3 mm. Almost all of that gap comes in the monsoon: Kota gets about 106 mm more in July, 66 mm more in August and 29 mm more in September. It also has more rainy days, 38.6 a year against 34.3.
Kota lies further south, nearer the monsoon low-pressure systems that move in from central India, and it sits in the Chambal basin, where heavy rain upstream matters as much as rain in the city. That is why Kota also has a big-river flood season, when the dams on the Chambal fill and water is released through Kota Barrage. See Kota Barrage flood season and Kota rainfall for details.
Interestingly, Jaipur’s monsoon afternoons are slightly warmer than Kota’s in July, August and September, partly because more cloud and rain keep Kota a little cooler by day.
Winter: Jaipur has colder mornings
In winter the pattern flips. Afternoons are almost identical, within about 1 C, but Jaipur’s nights are colder by about 2.3 to 2.8 C from November to February. In January the mean minimum is 8.4 C in Jaipur against 11.2 C in Kota. Kota’s lowest reading on record is 1.7 C.
For travellers this means one extra warm layer for Jaipur’s early mornings. For students moving from Jaipur to Kota, winter will feel a touch milder. Read Kota winter weather for fog, cold waves and what to wear.
Humidity: almost the same
Evening relative humidity, measured at 17:30 IST, is very similar in the two cities: 36 percent a year in Kota and 38 percent in Jaipur. Both are very dry from March to May (Kota 13 to 19 percent, Jaipur 18 to 22 percent) and both reach 69 percent in August. See Kota humidity for what those numbers feel like.
Adding Udaipur to the comparison
Many trips through Rajasthan include Udaipur as well. IMD’s Climatological Tables 1991-2020 give Udaipur (Dabok) airport an annual mean maximum of 32.2 C and mean minimum of 18.2 C, against 33.1 C and 21.8 C at Kota Airport, and 674.2 mm of normal annual rainfall against Kota’s 816.2 mm. Udaipur’s January nights are notably colder, with a mean minimum of 7.6 C, while its summer nights are milder than Kota’s. Our Kota vs Udaipur weather guide has the full month-by-month table.
Which city to visit in which month
Because the seasons line up so closely, the best months are the same for both: October to March, with November to February the most comfortable. A few nuances:
- December and January: both are lovely by day. Jaipur mornings are colder, so start sightseeing a little later there.
- March: both are warming fast; Kota is slightly hotter, so do outdoor sights there early.
- April to June: both are very hot. If you must travel, Jaipur’s slightly cooler nights are a small advantage.
- July and August: both are green and humid; Kota gets more rain and has the Chambal flood season to watch.
- September and October: both dry out and become pleasant again by mid-October.

Averages, not a forecast
Normals describe a typical year. Any week can buck them: a western disturbance can make Jaipur warmer than Kota for a few days, or a monsoon low can soak Jaipur while Kota stays dry. For the days you are actually travelling, check the IMD city forecasts and district warnings for both cities.
