Kota sunrise and sunset times shape daily life more than people expect. In May, the cool hour after sunrise is the only comfortable time for a walk. In January, a 7 am class starts before the sun is up. Photographers want the light at Garadia Mahadev and the Chambal riverfront, wedding planners want to know when an outdoor evening will turn dark and cold, and students want to know how much daylight they have for the walk home. This page gives the times for every half month of 2026, explains why Kota’s sunrises run late, and shows how to use the numbers.

The times below were calculated for central Kota (latitude 25.18 N, longitude 75.83 E) in Indian Standard Time, using the solar equations published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which also power its online solar calculator. They assume a flat horizon and standard atmospheric refraction, so allow a minute or two either way, more if hills or buildings block your view. Sunrise and sunset change by only about a minute between years, so the table is a good guide for 2027 as well.

Solar noon is when the sun is highest in the sky; shade is shortest and the sun strongest around this time.

The key dates of the year

  • Earliest sunrise: about 5:36 am, around 9 June.
  • Latest sunset: about 7:21 pm, around 3 July.
  • Longest day: about 13 hours 42 minutes, around 21 June.
  • Shortest day: about 10 hours 34 minutes, around 22 December.
  • Earliest sunset: about 5:36 pm, around 29 November.
  • Latest sunrise: about 7:14 am, around 13 January.

The earliest sunrise and latest sunset do not fall on the longest day, and the latest sunrise does not fall on the shortest day. That is because solar noon moves during the year, by about half an hour between early November and mid February in Kota. The difference between a long and a short day in Kota is about three hours, smaller than in north India’s plains and much larger than in the far south.

Why Kota’s sun runs late

India uses a single time zone, Indian Standard Time, based on longitude 82.5 E. Kota lies at about 75.8 E, almost seven degrees further west. Each degree is four minutes of the sun’s apparent movement, so the sun reaches its highest point in Kota about 27 minutes after it would on the IST meridian, before the equation of time adds or subtracts up to about a quarter of an hour. That is why solar noon in Kota falls between 12:10 pm and 12:41 pm, and why winter mornings stay dark well past 7 am. Cities further east, such as Patna, see the sun much earlier on the clock; see Kota vs Patna weather for how their climates differ too.

First light and last light

Civil twilight is the period when the sun is just below the horizon but there is enough light to see outdoors without street lights. In Kota it lasts about 22 to 26 minutes. Approximate first light (civil dawn) and last light (civil dusk) for mid-month:

Mid monthFirst lightLast light
January6:49 am6:23 pm
March6:13 am6:58 pm
May5:17 am7:29 pm
June5:10 am7:44 pm
August5:36 am7:26 pm
October6:02 am6:23 pm
December6:39 am6:04 pm

Winter haze and mist can make dawn feel later than these times, especially over the Chambal; see Kota fog.

Using the times in each season

Summer (April to June). The sun is up before 6 am, and IMD’s mean temperature at 08:30 IST is already about 30 to 34 C in these months. The hour after sunrise is the best time for exercise, errands and outdoor sightseeing, and the hours after sunset bring the next window. Plan around the long afternoon: the sun sets after 7 pm in May and June, so the heat lasts well into the evening. See Kota heatwave and Kota weather by time of day.

Monsoon (July to September). Daylight is long, but cloud often hides sunrise and sunset. The light after a shower, when cloud breaks in the evening, gives some of the year’s most dramatic skies. Check Kota cloud cover for how often skies are clear in each month.

Winter (November to February). Days are short, and sunset comes at or before about 6 pm from mid October to late January. Temperatures drop quickly after dark, so outdoor wedding functions, evening walks at the riverfront and two-wheeler rides home need a warm layer. Students walking to early classes in December and January do so before sunrise, in the coldest part of the day; reflective clothing and a torch help. See Kota winter weather and Kota wedding season weather.

Planning sunrise and sunset visits

  • Garadia Mahadev at sunrise: the viewpoint is outside the city, so leave early enough to arrive by first light. In winter that means leaving well before 6:30 am; in May, before 5 am.
  • Kishore Sagar and Jagmandir at sunset: arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunset for the best light on the water.
  • Chambal riverfront: pleasant after sunset in most months; in summer it fills up as the heat eases.
  • Photography: the soft “golden” light lasts roughly the first and last hour of sunlight; in winter, dust and haze can turn it orange.

Checking today’s time

For a specific day, the IMD city forecast for Kota on the IMD website and in the Mausam app lists sunrise and sunset. Our Kota weather today page explains where to find it alongside the forecast and warnings.

Frequently asked questions

What time is sunrise in Kota?

It depends on the season. In 2026, sunrise in Kota is around 7:10 to 7:14 am through January, about 6:20 am at the start of April and October, and about 5:36 to 5:40 am in June. For today's exact time, check the IMD city forecast or the table on this page.

What time is sunset in Kota?

Sunset in Kota is earliest, about 5:36 pm, around the end of November and early December, and latest, about 7:21 pm, in early July. Around the equinoxes in March and September it is close to 6:30 pm.

Why is the earliest sunrise not on the longest day?

Because solar noon itself drifts during the year (the equation of time). In Kota the earliest sunrise falls around 9 June and the latest sunset around 3 July, while the longest day is about 21 June. The same effect puts the latest sunrise in mid January, after the shortest day in late December.

Why does the sun rise so late in Kota in winter?

Kota is at about 75.8 degrees east, while Indian Standard Time is based on 82.5 degrees east. The sun therefore reaches its highest point in Kota at around 12:10 to 12:41 pm rather than noon, which pushes both sunrise and sunset later in the clock day, most noticeably on short winter days.

How long is twilight in Kota?

Civil twilight, when there is enough light outdoors without street lights, lasts about 22 to 26 minutes before sunrise and after sunset in Kota, a little longer in June and December than in March and September.
