Kota vs Udaipur weather is a common question for families, students and travellers choosing between the two cities, or planning a southern Rajasthan trip that takes in both. They are only a few hours apart, but their climates differ in ways that matter. Kota sits on the low plains of the Chambal valley in the Hadoti region; Udaipur lies among the Aravalli hills in Mewar, and its airport at Dabok is higher above sea level. The result is that Kota runs hotter, by day and especially by night, and gets more monsoon rain. This comparison uses the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Climatological Tables 1991-2020 for Kota Airport (station 42452) and Udaipur (A) Dabok (station 42542).

These are long-term averages. For current conditions, see the Kota weather forecast page and IMD’s forecast for Udaipur.

Max and min are IMD’s mean daily maximum and minimum temperatures. Rain is the mean monthly total.

Summer: Kota is harsher

From April to June, Kota is clearly the hotter city. Its May mean maximum of 42.6 C is 2.4 degrees above Udaipur’s, and the hottest day of an average May reaches about 46.1 C at Kota against 43.4 C at Udaipur. The bigger difference is at night: Kota’s May mean minimum of 30.0 C is more than 4 degrees warmer than Udaipur’s 25.8 C. Warm nights are what make Kota’s summer so draining, because homes and bodies do not cool down before the next hot day. Read Kota heatwave and Kota weather in May for how to cope.

Monsoon: Kota is wetter

Both cities get most of their rain from July to September, but Kota receives more: 816.2 mm a year on average against 674.2 mm at Udaipur airport. The difference is largest in July (296.7 mm vs 235.6 mm) and August (269.6 mm vs 205.4 mm). IMD counts 38.6 rainy days a year at Kota and 33.9 at Udaipur. During the monsoon Kota also faces flood risk from the Chambal dams upstream, which is explained in our Kota Barrage flood season guide.

Udaipur’s lakes depend on monsoon rain in the surrounding hills, and how full they are varies widely from year to year. For both cities, the real question in any given year is how the monsoon performs, not what the normal says.

Winter: Udaipur has colder nights

In winter the daytime picture flips slightly: Udaipur’s mean maximum is a little higher than Kota’s from December to February. But nights are much colder in Udaipur. Its January mean minimum is 7.6 C, against 11.2 C at Kota, and the coldest night of an average January is about 3.2 C at Udaipur airport compared with 7.4 C at Kota. Travellers moving between the two in December or January should pack an extra warm layer for Udaipur. See Kota winter weather for Kota’s cold season.

Humidity and comfort

Morning relative humidity is higher at Udaipur airport in every month, for example 70 percent in January against 67 percent at Kota, and 78 percent against 70 percent in September. In practice, both cities feel dry from October to May and humid during the monsoon. Kota’s higher temperatures mean its humid monsoon days often feel more uncomfortable. Our Kota humidity guide explains the figures for Kota.

Best time to visit each

  • Both cities: October to March is the most comfortable period, with dry weather and pleasant days.
  • Kota: late October to February is ideal. See best time to visit Kota.
  • Udaipur: the same season, with colder nights in December and January. The lakes are often at their fullest after a good monsoon.
  • Summer travel: if you must travel between April and June, Udaipur is a little more bearable than Kota, especially at night.

For a broader comparison with the state capital, see Kota vs Jaipur weather.

Wind, sunshine and storms

The two cities also differ in their wind and storm patterns. Kota’s mean annual wind speed in IMD’s tables is 6.3 km/h, against 4.7 km/h at Udaipur airport, and Kota’s windiest months are May and June, when hot westerly winds (loo) and pre-monsoon dust storms are common. Udaipur’s hill setting shelters it a little. Both cities share the same broad pattern of clear, dry skies from October to May and cloudy monsoon months from July to September. Our Kota wind guide and Kota dust storm guide cover Kota in detail.

Kota compared with more cities

Udaipur is one of several useful comparisons. The table below gives IMD’s 1991-2020 annual means for Kota and the cities most students and visitors travel from.
