Kota weather by time of day: mornings, afternoons and evenings
Written by Kota Weather Editorial Team · Updated

Kota weather by time of day matters as much as the month you choose. A January day can start at a chilly 11 C near dawn and reach the mid-twenties by afternoon, while a May morning is already well into the thirties by breakfast. If you are planning sightseeing, a walk on the Chambal riverfront, exercise or a commute between coaching classes, the hour you pick decides whether the weather is pleasant or punishing.
This guide uses the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Climatological Tables 1991-2020 for Kota (station 42452). IMD’s observatory records the weather at fixed hours; the tables give long-term averages for 08:30 IST (03 UTC) and 17:30 IST (12 UTC), along with the mean daily maximum and minimum. They describe a normal day, not a forecast. For today’s readings, see Kota weather today.

The daily minimum usually comes around dawn and the maximum in the afternoon, so the 08:30 and 17:30 readings sit between them. RH is relative humidity.
Winter: cool mornings, warm afternoons
From November to February, Kota’s day has a wide swing. In January the mean daily minimum is 11.2 C and the 08:30 reading 13.7 C, but by 17:30 the air has warmed to 21.6 C. Early mornings are also the calmest part of the day: IMD records calm air at 08:30 on 62 percent of December days, 56 percent of November days and 51 percent of January days, against well under a third at 17:30. Calm, cool, humid mornings let mist, smoke and dust collect near the ground, so visibility is often reduced until the sun has warmed the air. IMD counts about 20 January mornings with visibility of only 1 to 4 km at 08:30. Read more in Kota fog and Kota air quality.
Best hours: roughly 10 am to 5 pm for sightseeing, with a warm layer for early starts and after sunset. See Kota winter weather.
Spring: the swing gets hotter
March and April keep the big morning-to-evening difference, but shift it upwards. In March the 08:30 reading is 23.9 C and 17:30 is 32.0 C; in April they are 30.5 C and 37.7 C. Afternoon humidity drops to 13 to 19 percent, so the heat is dry and the sun strong. Mornings are the best time for walks and outdoor sport from mid-March onwards. Our month guides for March and April give more detail.
Summer: only dawn and night bring relief
May and early June are the hardest months in Kota at every hour. Even at 08:30 the mean temperature is 34.2 C in May, and by 17:30 it is 41.0 C. The mean daily minimum of 30.0 C means nights rarely cool properly. The window for outdoor activity is short: the hour around sunrise and the late evening. Avoid exertion from late morning to early evening, and remember that hot westerly winds are strongest in the afternoon. See Kota heatwave and Kota weather in May.
Monsoon: small swings, high humidity
Once the monsoon is established, cloud and rain flatten the daily cycle. In August the 08:30 and 17:30 readings are only 2.6 degrees apart (27.8 C and 30.4 C), and morning humidity is 80 percent. Sunny breaks still push afternoons up, and humid air makes them feel heavier than the numbers suggest; our Kota wet bulb temperature guide explains why. Thunderstorms in Kota are most common from June to September; see Kota thunderstorms.
Post-monsoon: the return of the swing
In October the skies clear and the daily range widens again: 26.5 C at 08:30 and 32.4 C at 17:30, with afternoons still warm. By November mornings are fresh at 21.2 C and evenings mild. These are among the most comfortable months for outdoor plans at almost any hour, apart from the middle of the day in early October. See Kota weather in October and Kota weather in November.
Daylight: when the day starts and ends
The 08:30 and 17:30 IST observations sit at different points in the day depending on the season. In January the sun rises at about 7:12 to 7:14 am, so 08:30 is barely an hour after sunrise and still cool, while 17:30 is close to sunset. In June the sun is up by about 5:36 am, so by 08:30 the ground has already been heating for three hours, and at 17:30 there is still well over an hour and a half of strong sun left before sunset at about 7:18 pm.
That explains much of the pattern in the table above: winter mornings are cold because the observation comes so soon after a long, clear night, and summer evenings stay hot because the sun sets late. The sun is highest in Kota between about 12:10 pm and 12:41 pm, not at noon, because Kota lies west of the meridian used for Indian Standard Time. Full times by month are in Kota sunrise and sunset times.
Practical tips by activity
- Walking and running: in winter, wait until the morning mist lifts if air quality is poor; from March to June go out before about 8 am.
- Sightseeing: outdoor forts, gardens and the riverfront are most comfortable from late morning to sunset in winter, and early morning or evening in summer. Our Kota sightseeing by season guide lists which places suit each season.
- Students and commuters: expect cold early classes in December and January and very hot afternoon walks from April to June. See Kota weather for students.
- Photography: clear, calm winter mornings give soft light but haze; the clearest skies in the dry season are covered in our Kota cloud cover guide.
Normals are averages over 30 years. A western disturbance can bring a cloudy, cold day in winter, and a heatwave can push every hour higher in summer, so always check the current forecast as well.
